Cu4tro Cantos

The Four Songs of Life

Cu4tro Cantos is the new Ala Eh Blog. Since I cannot provide pure Batangueño articles, I decided a revamp of the site, which I think is more appropriate. Cu4tro Cantos refers to the four members of the Cantos Family. In spanish, Cuatro means Four, and Cantos means Songs.

Installing Beryl on Asus Eee PC

As part of my daily journey with my Asus eee pc, I attempted to install Beryl. It was not easy for a noob like me, but amazingly I succeeded.

You don’t have to know everything about Linux. As long as you know what is happening, you can still be on the right path.

The primary steps I followed was the one published on Asus Eee PC Wiki. It seems basic but it’s not detailed.

Here are the steps on installing Beryl on Asus Eee PC.

  1. Add debian repositories to your sources.list file: This was the eeeasiest part for me since I have already done it a couple of times. All you need to do is open the sources.list file by typing the following from the console.

    kwrite /etc/apt/sources.list
    then add the ff:
    #Beryl Repositories
    deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main
    deb http://debian.beryl-project.org/ etch main

I recommend switching to super user so you won’t need to append “sudo” everytime you time admin commands. - type “sudo su or sudo bash”

  2. Import a PUBLIC KEY to allow downloading from the repo site: I went into some troubles around this step. I got a PUBLIC KEY download error and I can’t import the KEY. So I attempted the next step.
  3. Run apt-get update: Since I did not succeed the second step, I also had error on this one which is related to that DEBIAN PUBLIC KEY. It’s says it’s just a warning though, but I still can’t proceed with the next step.
  4. Installing the packages: Though I did not succeed with the previous two steps, I still attempted to proceed on this step which is installing the downloaded packages.
  5. sudo apt-get install beryl beryl-core beryl-manager beryl-plugins beryl-plugins-data beryl-settings beryl-settings-bindings emerald-themes

But it’s too tight that I really cannot succeed.

So I headed back to the second step and researched on the error I got. What I found is something related to GPG, and I had to install the PUBLIC KEY manually. I also had to install the GPG itself. These things, I really had no idea what I did. All I know is I succeeded.

  6. Then right after I installed the PUBLIC KEY, I downloaded the emerarld theme. Then preceded with the steps which starts here.

See the steps are somehow vague, but I succeeded.

Anyway, using Beryl is not as convenient as usng KDE. I think it’s really for more advanced users but I’m still happy that I successfully installed it on our Asus Eee. But it’s really cool!

White is Beauteeeful

White Asus Eee Pc

They are saying that a Black Asus Eee PC is more beautiful and sexier than white. I “said” yes. I “agreed”. I actually wanted the Black one more than White. But when we got our Asus Eee, I changed my mind. White is prettier.

For us it is. Because it just matches its partners. I got an SE K608i Phone connected via 3G and it’s white. I also got a white N6120 classic and it matches the Asus Eee just perfectly well.

Another nice thing, I also have an iPod shuffle 2nd Gen which is also white/silver.

N6120 3G connected on Asus Eee PC

Just claimed my new phone from Smart. I already incurred 18 months on plan 800 and they said I’m already eligible to extend my account for another 2 years. Smart service is not as bad as Sun Cellular so I am extending my plan. And upgraded to plan 1200. I’m actually averaging 1500 monthly.

Comes with a new plan is a new Nokia 6120 Classic. It’s actually the most beautiful phone I ever had. Thouggh, I am not into design. The phone is 3G capable and can be used as modem. So I get it.

Installing 3G connection on Asus Eee Pc using Nokia 6120 is just as simple as the previous settings for LG and Sony Ericsson. Most specially if you follow the GUI Way. The only difference: since I already have a previous dial up connection which is dialup1, I have to edit dialup2 for the new connection. And don’t forrget! When you connect your N6120 to your Asus Eee, there will appear 3 options on your phone. Choose PC Suite. Very easy. And here I am! Connected!

I use 3G @ home, Free Wi-Fi when outside. When @ office, I use LAN. :D

It was Pizzahut’s. Not Starbucks’.

I posted previously the Wi-Fi hot spots I have tested and used thus far, but I think it confused some of you so I want to make it clear.

I actually have not tried Starbuck’s Wi-Fi. So I have no idea if their Wi-Fi is free or you have to pay so you can use it.

The story goes … Read More
