Wow! I almost forgot to publish all of my drafts. I never thought it would be this hard to provide a good entry especially when there are readers expecting for it. (Are there readers? I hope someone will leave a comment just so I have a proof. ) I also just realized that this blog is already 2 months dead. We need to revive this.

With that being said, I thought of this idea to teach Batangueño words. As so you know, I am a pure Batangueño.



Batangueño uses Tagalog as the primary dialect but there are some tagalog words that are beyond others understanding. For example, people in Manila (Manileños), Cavite (Caviteños) and Laguna (Laguneños), for them it may seem that these words are native to Batangueños but I think it’s really not. In fact, I also hear some of those from other places. And as far as I know, they are Tagalog. So here we go.

Let’s start with body parts.
1. Bay-awang - This is the true Tagalog for waist”. Bewang is a slang for this.
2. Taynga - Tagalog for ears. Tenga is the slang.
3. Galamay - Tagalog for fingers. Daliri is a more popularly used word for fingers. They are both tagalog but Galamay is deeper. Oooops!
4. Uban - Tagalog for white hairs. Although this is no unfamiliar word, “Puting Buhok” or white hair is more commonly used in other places.
5. Gulugod - is the area where you can find the upper back, somewhere below the nape.
6. Siwi - corners of the lips.
7. Alak-alakan - the part behind the knee.
8. Baraso - derived from the Spansih word “Braso” which means arms. It is more popularly known as “Bisig“.
9. Kuyukot - is the cleavage formed by the butts. I do not know how others call it.
10. Bayugo - pertains to the movable round thing on your knees.
11. Lalaugan - the esophagus. Lalamunan

Other Batangueño terms.

12. Guyam - means ants. Guyaman pertains to the place where the ants are.
13. Gabok - another word for alikabok which means dusts.
14. Gura - means hat. It is more popular as Sombrero. A spanish word for hat.
15. Patikar - a term used to describe somebody who is running fast.
16. Utay-utay - means, little by little.
17. Panay - means, all.
18. Kawot - pertains to soup laddle, commonly known as Sandok.
19. Alid - dried small fishes. A little larger than fried Dilis.
20. Hawot - dried fish. larger than Alid. Commonly known as Tuyo.
21. Maalwan - means Easy.
22. Mapalot - an adjective used to describe the smell of urine. Synonymous with Mapanghe.
23. Mahuna - means not firm. Marupok.
24. Matalaw - tall but thin.
25. Tikin - a long bamboo pole used for getting Coconuts.
26. Bulos - another round of rice.
27. Luug - something clogged in the throat. e.g. “Hey! Swallow it little by little. Your throat might get clogged.”
28. Bital-ak - Fishbone stuck inside your throat.
29. Labangan - food container where pigs eat.
30. Gulok - Bolo. popularly known as Itak.
31. Kaluban - holster for bolo.
32. Balisong - butterfly knife.
33. Gay-an / Gay-on - Like that. Ganyan.
34. Garine / Garne - Like this. Ganito.
35. Parine / Parne - Come here. Parito.
36. Tibusok - adjective used for describing a straight dive.
37. Ilado - not fresh.
38. Palupuhan - the center line of the roof.
39. Batalan - a place at home where old grannies used to wash and bathe. Usually attached to the kitchen.
40. Talbis - edge but not a sharp edge.
41. Kuluong - Wishing well. Balon.
42. Aplaya - Seashore. I think this one is the same with the Spanish word.
